Solitary, saucer-shaped flowers in early spring in shades of red, violet-blue, mauve and also white. Archetypically a plant of the Greek countryside. The Metamorphosis of Ovid tells that the plant was created by the goddess Venus when she sprinkled nectar on the blood of her dead lover Adonis. Freshly collected wild seed.
