Helleborus vesicarius

The green, bell-shaped flowers are shaded purplish to chocolate brown on the outside and produced in late winter to early spring. These are followed spectacular highly inflated fruiting capsules which are the most showy feature of the plant. Seed germinates irregularly and the cucumber-like seedlings usually go dormant without producing true leaves. This first-year, dormant roots can be lost through over-drying & this is the most critical period. A challenge but a rare opportunity to obtain fresh wild seed.
