Ramblings of a Rare Plant Hunter
This attractive publication has a gatefold cover for durability, is perfect bound, measures 200 mm x 250mm and is 218 pages long. The text is illustrated by vibrant colour images of plants in their natural environment, as well as photography depicting some of the wild and remote landscapes and local culture encountered throughout the author’s travels. The book sections are divided by Marcus’ insightful poetry and intricate botanical paintings by Susan Jarick. A pictorial page of some of Hill View Rare Plants’ past plant catalogues is also included.

Ramblings of a Rare Plant Hunter is an eclectic compilation of writing and poetry by Marcus Harvey, founder of Tasmanian nursery Hill View Rare Plants. A plantsman at heart, Marcus was perpetually curious, interested in everything and everyone around him.
The plant hunting journeys that inspired Ramblings were at times arduous, yet always exciting, entertaining and endlessly fascinating. They took him up the macho mountains of the Cretan shepherds, through the warm and welcoming Aegean islands, along the turquoise Turkish Riviera, down the bare-bones Mani peninsula in the Peloponnese and deep into the gloriously vegetated mountain landscapes of Northern Greece.
Marcus was a raconteur. His expeditions in Greece and Turkey provided a wellspring of botanical and historical riches for him to explore. This collection covers a wide sweep of subjects: the trials and joys of navigating the less travelled roads in search of particular plants, pondering historical byways, reflective musings on Greek and Turkish life, horticultural essays on the delights of his favourite bulb genera, and a tribute to his friendship with renowned Tasmanian plantswoman, Essie Huxley. All are described with infectious enthusiasm and humour.
